‘Asymmetric Power’ refers to the power that can cause military asymmetry between belligerents just by holding it. It stands for the power weaker position holds to overcome the gap of the force that cannot be overcome under normal circumstances. And this weapon system is a weapon that can only be used on a limited basis if important issues such as the survival of the nation are at stake.

By the time I produced the ‘A/P’ album, I was working on creating weapons. The green area of life, which was considered peaceful and safe, turned out to be a barren ruin, and all those walking on it were naked and trembled with fear of the ruthless bombing of life. I imagined a means to protect myself no matter what indiscriminate attacks the contemporary world has poured out, and more than that, i started to imagine an "absolute weapon" that can counterattack a world that shows no mercy.

Techno music with full speed resembles examples of asymmetrical power. It is so in that it is the crystal of cutting-edge technology that blossomed in the final stages of the industry and it encourages human destructive desires. It is pointed out that techno music, which has been touted as a music branch that resists the oppression of the system, has actually been a mimesis genre of the development process of technology itself. Techno music rather has been becoming an industry itself, leading the trend and raising the threshold of human stimulation.

The subheading of the album, "The Romantic Weaponry For Those Who Have Not", is originated from this point of view. This is because ‘A/P’ was not created to dream of an impossible liberation from the media industry but to fully taste the destructive stimulation that "speedy” techno music has offered and to celebrate the high accessibility of electronic dance music.

For me, I rarely sympathize with the political manifesto, such as art liberating humans and the artist being the flag bearer of the revolution. I hope that the crystal of the energy that I used to keep my body and mind firm will burst through the speakers, and that you will also have your own weapon, and that the simple romance and dream of a mere DJ/producer will be transformed into courage and weapon to break down the barriers of life for those who enjoy this music.

비대칭 전력(Asymmetric Power)은 그것을 보유하는 것만으로 국가 간의 군사적 비대칭을 유발할 수 있는 전력, 정상적인 상황에서는 극복할 수 없는 무력의 격차를 극복하기 위해 만들어진 무기 체계 일반을 뜻한다. 그리고 이 무기 체계는 국가의 존망과 같은 중요한 쟁점이 달려있을 경우에만 제한적으로 사용할 수 있는 무기이다.

‘A/P(비대칭 전력)’ 앨범을 제작할 무렵 나는 무기를 만들어내는 일에 몰두하고 있었다. 평화롭고 안전한 것으로 여겨졌던 삶의 녹색 지대는 풀 한 포기 자라지 않는 폐허였다는 사실이 드러났고 그 위를 걷고 있는 사람들은 모두 헐벗은 채로 삶의 무자비한 폭격이 불러일으키는 공포감에 몸을 떨었다. 나는 동시대의 세계가 어떤 무차별적인 공격을 쏟아붓더라도 스스로를 지켜낼 수 있는 수단, 그리고 그 이상으로 어떤 자비도 보여주지 않는 세계에 오히려 반격을 가할 수 있는 ‘절댓값의 무기’를 상상했다.

전속을 다해 질주하는 테크노(Techno) 음악은 비대칭 전력의 예시들과 매우 닮아있다. 산업의 마지막 단계에서 꽃피운 최첨단 기술(Cutting-edge Technology)의 결정체라는 점에서 그러하고 인간의 파괴적인 욕망을 부추긴다는 점에서 그러하다. 줄곧 시스템의 억압에 저항하는 음악 갈래로 선전되어 있는 테크노 음악이 사실은 기술의 발달 과정 자체를 미메시스한 장르였으며 오히려 산업 그 자체가 되어 유행을 선도하고 자극의 역치를 끌어올리는데 앞장서고 있다는 지적이다.

‘가지지 못한 이들을 위한 낭만적인 무기 체계(The Romantic Weaponry For Those Who Have Not)’라는 앨범의 부제목은 바로 이러한 지적으로부터 비롯되었다. 오감의 역치를 매 순간 갱신하지 않고서는 그 체제를 유지할 수 없는 매체 산업으로부터 불가능한 해방을 꿈꾸기보다는 ‘속도’의 음악이 들려주는 파괴적인 자극을 남김없이 맛 보는 것, 그리고 지위고하를 막론하고 누구나에게 열려있는 일렉트로닉 댄스 뮤직의 높은 접근성을 축복하는 일이 'A/P(비대칭 전력)'이 만들어진 이유이기 때문이다.

예술이 인간을 해방시킨다던지, 예술가가 혁명의 기수가 되어야 한다던지하는 정치적인 메니페스토에는 도통 공감하기가 어려웠다. 내 몸과 마음 하나 건사하기 위해 부대꼈던 에너지의 결정체가 스피커를 통해 터져나가 그대들 또한 자신만의 무기를 갖게 되기를 바라며. '가지지 못한 일개 DJ/프로듀서의 소박한 낭만과 꿈'이 이 음악을 즐기는 이들의 삶을 가로막는 벽을 통쾌하게 무너뜨리는 용기와 무기로 전환되기를 바라며.
